Saw Richard on a Discovery Channel show (World Richest Person?). This monk sure is an interesting guy.

Born Richard Fabre, moved to the port city of Chennai (then Madras) in 1971 to work for a leather export firm. After a couple of years, the govt. of India bans leather export, which means our man is left without a job. Richard was also financially wiped off. Life then takes the proverbial U turn!

He found inspiration to carry on with life when he saw a leper who lost his fingers and toes and yet was content in life. He embraced Hinduism and became a monk (Swami Pranavananda Brahmendra Avadhuta).

Though this guy is a CEO of a clothing company, he himself leads a life of a monk (an abode in Kolli Hills) and wears no clothes (now if there’s irony, it’s here!). OK! He does not go around in his birthday suits when he meets his customers (Gehenna to all perverts! :P). When quizzed about the motivation for holding on to things that are worldly, he reasoned that he has the faculty and the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of people he is able to provide jobs. His company makes close to 40 Million USD on an annual basis and his employees are among the best paid in Chennai. The monk himself takes a monthly salary of 200 USD per month!

He was voted the CEO of year 2004. He is based out of Chennai and Kolli Hills and is the CEO of Fashions International. His customers include Kenzo, Lee Cooper, Catimini and Haggar, and retailers including Jules and Camaïeu Femme.
